In relation to a lack of data in Australia to assess the effect that direct financial cost has on the use of health services, this paper identifies the database maintained by the Health Insurance Commission (HIC) as one source of information about out of pocket costs for medical services. Financial data from the HIC for the three age cohorts are presented, as well as findings from a substudy of the mid age and older cohorts of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. Results from the Health Services Substudy are discussed in relation to issues of access to health services; satisfaction with most recent GP visit; method of transport and travel time; health insurance; and unmet need for care.
