Hume Region Passenger & Freight Rail Review Final Report
In 2011, The Hume RDA Committee commissioned Stage 1 of the Hume Region Passenger and Freight Rail Review project. The project undertook a review of both passenger and freight rail services within the region and was delivered by GHD.
The review identified the need for significant improvements due to a scarcity of passenger rail services within the region and a continuing decline in the use of rail to transport freight.
Key recommendations from the review included included:
- Gauge standardisation of the Shepparton (Goulburn Valley) Line
- Increase passenger rail services along the Shepparton and Albury/ Wodonga Lines
- Track upgrades along the Shepparton and Albury/Wodonga Lines to achieve parity with Regional Fast Rail (RFR) standards (i.e. Class 1 track)
- Additional passenger rail rolling stock
- Investigate opportunities for a container terminal in the Shepparton region
- Develop the GV Logistics Centre
- Develop Intermodal Rail Terminals at the GV Logistics Centre and at LOGIC Wodonga
- Increase the freight network to allow private sidings/spur lines to connect to the main network
- Introduce a 'business carriage' on all trains within the Hume region.
