Fire management in the rangelands

A review of fire management in the rangelands aimed to assist government officers to assess the adequacy and effectiveness of proposed rangeland fire management programs and projects for the second round of Natural Heritage Trust funding (NHT2), improve the region's ability to plan for and implement fire management strategies drawing on best practice, and to assist in the implementation of ecologically sustainable fire management in the rangelands. The report identifies why fire management is a priority issue in the rangelands, collates and synthesises current information on fire-ecology of rangeland ecosystems, recommends fire-frequency thresholds for the major vegetation types, considers the relevance of fire management research in other areas of Australia to the rangelands, and provides a checklist for good fire management planning. The report also considers gaps in current fire management knowledge and identifies priority regions in the rangelands where fire management plans are required or need improving.
