This policy sheet provides a brief overview of demographic research on farmers in Australia's agricultural sectors that can be used to inform natural resource management (NRM) policy. The research outcome provides detailed statistical information on age, income and occupation trends in the rural sector, and dominant land use practices and attitudes. Policy makers can use the information to understand who the future land managers will be in different parts of rural Australia. The research also highlights the need for future rural demographic data collection to take into consideration the increasing number of people with multiple occupations. The policy sheet also provides information on the science underpinning the project.
