The city and the bush : Indigenous wellbeing across remoteness areas
This chapter compares the circumstances of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in major cities, regional areas and remote areas. In 2008, close to one third of Indigenous people lived in Major Cities while just under one quarter lived in Remote Areas. Drawing on several statistical surveys, including the 2002 and 2008 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Surveys (NATSISS) and the 2006 Census, this chapter presents brief information on living arrangements, partnering, having children, cultural differences, non-school qualifications, engagement in education and work of young people, employment of adults, income, housing, overcrowding, housing deficiencies, health, health risk factors, well being, and crime and safety.
