A profile of rural Australia is provided in this paper which makes comparisons between urban and rural living in terms of average incomes, access to services and unemployment problems. The federal government's Job Network and Work for the Dole policies are discussed along with the Regional Assistance Program, arguing that they have been successful in contributing to economic prosperity and promoting greater access to services and opportunities for country people.
