Domestic violence in regional Australia: a literature review

Aiming to consolidate and enhance the understanding of domestic violence in regional, rural and remote communities, this report reviews existing national and international research on the issue, including some analysis of data from the Supported Accommodation Assistance Programs. Issues discussed include: measuring the extent of nature of domestic violence in rural communities; state based research in Western Australia and NSW; Indigenous women; women from from non English speaking backgrounds; young and older women; children; women with disabilities; farm women; women in mining communities; social and economic issues; community values and attitudes; factors increasing vulnerability to domestic violence; responding to domestic violence, including early intervention, prevention, crisis response, transitional and recovery responses, legal responses, integrated approaches; the Rural Community Development Model; and community education and awareness.
