An even spread: distribution and population
Regional areas of Australia face particular challenges related to changes in Australia's demographic profile and need to take proactive measures now if they are to remain socially and economically viable in the future. South Australia (SA) is already beginning to feel the effects of population ageing and population decline as a result of lower birth rates and internal migration patterns, with some regional areas experiencing significant volatility in employment opportunities and public infrastructure servicing. Although the SA Government has an important role to play in redressing the emerging imbalances, the community must also take action. The Economic Development Board (SA) recently recommended a series of actions to address issues relating to population decline and ageing in SA. These include promoting SA as a business investment focus and enhancing business migration to regional areas.
