The Contribution of Geographical Education to Regional Sustainability

  • Year: 2004
  • Author: West, Bryan A
  • Journal Name: Geographical Education
  • Journal Number: 17
  • Country: Australia

Current literature regarding geography education provides an insight into how this subject can contribute to regional sustainability. This essay reviews the literature surrounding the nature of Geography and its multidisciplinarity. It then discusses how the methodological emphasis of school geography and its studies at a range of scales support students in the development of problem solving skills. Because of these characteristics, Geography is well placed to develop in students the knowledge and skills needed to ensure decisions affecting regional sustainability lead regions toward preferred rather than probable futures. An article written by three Year 10 Geography students is included.
